Greater Accra Region

Greater Accra Region - Ghana

In the home of our vibrant capital city lies the gateway to Ghana, the beautiful, exciting and very distinctive Greater Accra Region. Within the region exist the country's main commercial and industrial centers - Accra and Tema, they are two of the primary metropolitan areas in this very densely populated region. The conveniently located kotoka international airport is an easy 12km from the city's center.

Beautiful traditional building contrast with the modern ones, this transaction from old to new businesses started during the 19th century. Accra has been the capital of Ghana since 1877. It spreads along the Atlantic coast and has a fun and budding nightlife. Museums, well maintained public monuments, business and commercial areas and other such sites will captivate the attention of any tourist or traveler. Chaos in busy markets only adds to the fun to be had.

Ghana's heritage and history is reflected in a spectacular way at the National museum, where the exhibits show Ghana in the prehistoric times. A few highlights are the national theatre with modernized distinctive architecture, the center for national income, independence square, the Kwame Nkumah, the fishing ports at James town and m-Makola market.

The distinctive buildings set among elegant tree-lined gardens are popular for all - students and teachers. International gatherings are all relatively common in the Accra International Conference Center.

The modern industrial zone is one of the major hubs in Tema, it also has the best and largest fishing fleet and commercial port in Ghana. Tema is a relatively new town in comparison to Accra and is located some 30kms from Accra.

Weekends bring out the crowds on the scrumptious Pleasure Beach and Kokrobite beach which are located at a close 25km west of Accra. These beaches are loved by the locals as well as tourists.

Resorts on the Atlantic coast and the beaches of the estuary go hand in hand. Estuary of the great river Volta and Ada lie a little further down the coast where people get that slice of the relaxation cakes participating in river trips and water sports, and the waters off the cost are rich with "game fish" - any true fisherman's dream day.
